USA — A volunteer firefighter died Friday night while fighting a large grass fire near Mannford.

The Silver City volunteer firefighter, only identified as John, had been fighting the large grass fire for several hours, when he collapsed and stopped breathing around 10:30 p.m. He was taken to an ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead.

The blaze had been burning since Friday morning and is being blamed on arson. Police said it is possible that the arson charge may be upgraded to negligent homicide, because of John’s death.

Authorities are interested in finding a white truck that had been seen in the area.

John had been a volunteer firefighter with Silver City for five years and was on the department’s board of directors. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
