USA — A wind-driven wildfire has burned more than 2,000 acres of brush and heavy grassland in California’s Owens Valley.

State fire protection spokesman Daniel Berlant says the fire erupted Thursday afternoon about six miles east of Fort Independence. The area about 185 miles north of Los Angeles is populated with ranches.

Berlant says the flames are being fanned by strong winds from an incoming storm.

He says a helicopter crew, five inmate crews, and state and federal equipment are being used to battle the blaze. The fire was about 20 percent contained Thursday evening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
