USA — Firefighters contained an 80-acre brush fire in Sonoita that threatened homes late Monday afternoon. They say it started with a camp fire set by illegal immigrants.
About 3-4 homes in the Honnas Ranch Estates were in danger but were not harmed.
The Sonoita-Elgin Fire Department got help from several nearby fire departments while fighting the blaze just west of Highway 83 and north of Highway 82. But what helped the most was homeowners who cleared defensible space around their homes, allowing the firefighters to get in and leaving little for the flames to burn.
“Had that not been the case,” says Battalion Commander Kevin Venos of the Sonora-Elgin Fire Department, “then we would have had high grass up to the houses. We almost positively could have had a structure involved.”
