New  Zealand — Thirty firefighters are battling a pine forest blaze in Kaimaumau, in the Far North.

Approximately 300 square metres of forest is alight 33km north of Kaitaia and nearby buildings are possibly threatened.

Seven fire crews from Kaitaia, Pukenui, Karikari, Mangonui responded to the call at noon, and are trying to keep the fire from nearby buildings, Fire Service northern communications centre shift manager Jaron Phillips said.

He could not confirm if people had been evacuated from nearby buildings, but a helicopter was on standby.

“It started from a rubbish fire which got out of control,” Mr Phillips said.

Last Sunday a stolen car was set ablaze and sparked a scrub fire in the same area.

Four fire appliances were needed to extinguish a fire in an 80m x 80m block of vegetation in Kaimaumau on January 25.
