USA — Some Nueces County residents may face stiff fines for starting a brush fire near County Road 73 Wednesday.
Witnesses said some people were burning trash in a barrel when sparks touched off a fire that spread across six properties.
Investigators said the people who started the fire could be fined because there is a burn ban in effect. However, they will not make that determination until they’ve completed their investigation.
Neighbors said they did their best to keep the flames away from their homes.
“We ran around and we got all the water hoses and hooked them up to the house and started drenching the yard so it wouldn’t come across. Thank God for the fire department,” property owner Amy Starry said.
