Australia — Fire authorities have urged West Australians to be on the lookout for arsonists after what they believe is the deliberate lighting of up to 22 fires in the hills around Perth.

Fire and Emergency Services Authority spokesman Phil Cribb said the suspicious fires were being lit in areas near homes.

“With the weather predicted to be in the high 30s for the next few days, there is a real danger one of these fires could threaten homes and lives,” Mr Cribb said.

“Hills residents should be on the lookout for suspicious behaviour or persons lighting fires.

“If you have any information contact Crime Stoppers immediately on 1800 333 000.”

He said anyone caught lighting fires was liable to a prison term of 14 years and a fine of up to $250,000, or both.

A $50,000 reward is available for information leading to the identification and conviction of people deliberately lighting fires in WA.

Mr Cribb said that even without the danger presented by arsonists, anyone living within 100 metres of bushland should have a bushfire action plan.

This included having properties well maintained and having an emergency kit on standby.
