USA — Authorities in Southern California have ordered hundreds of people to evacuate their homes as a storm threatens to set off mudslides on hills stripped by bushfires.

Brea police Lieutenant Jim Tibbetts said hundreds of homes in the Orange County suburb of Yorba Linda were placed under a mandatory evacuation order on Monday morning.

Tibbetts said he did not know when residents might be allowed to return.

A bushfire last month stripped vegetation from hillsides in the area and destroyed more than 100 homes.

The storm spread heavy rain across the region on Monday morning. It also produced heavy snow at higher elevations and traffic was snarled in mountain passes.
