South Africa — Eight luxury homes have been destroyed in a raging fire on the slopes of the Kogelberg Mountains above Gordons Bay in the Cape Peninsula.

The fire that started in Grabouw at the weekend, was being fanned by gale force winds, SABC reported.

Earlier, close to 300 people – including a film crew – were evacuated from the nearby Kogelbaai resort after ash from bellowing smoke coming from the mountain made visibility in the area near impossible.

Wildfire fighters and helicopters were fighting two veld fires in the Overberg, while three teams were assisting Cape Nature in fighting an out of control veld fire in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve.

Between 120 and 150 wildfire fighters were on the ground battling raging fires in the mainly mountainous terrain.

While there have been no reported fatalities, some firefighters have suffered minor injuries. The Western Cape premier is expected to tour the area to assess the damages.

More than 300 people in Molweni in KwaZulu-Natal escaped a fire last night, after a man attacked the youth centre where they had sought refuge. The families were victims of recent storms in the area.
