California, USA — Face masks are available free of charge to those who cannot avoid exposure to the smoke from the Tea Fire.
The masks are being distributed until 2:30 p.m. today at MacKenzie Park in the parking lot off Los Positas Road.
Direct Relief International is distributing the masks in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Health Department and the City of Santa Barbara.
There is a limited supply of masks, so those picking up masks are asked to take only what they absolutely need.
Its better to avoid exposure, particularly for those with known lung or breathing problems, said Dr. Elliot Schulman, director of the county health department, in a written statement.
But if you have to be outdoors, especially if youre doing vigorous activity, it is wise to wear a mask to reduce exposure to inhaled wildland fire smoke.
