Greece — A fire broke out late Monday night in a forested area on Mt. Athos, but was not threatening monasteries in the all-male monastic community, firefighters said Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out at 11:30 p.m., in the Petrovouno area of Mt. Athos, and was burning pine trees and brush.

A strong firefighting force from Halkidiki and Thessaloniki rushed to Mt. Athos immediately after the blaze broke out, but firefighting efforts were being hampered by strong northeasterly winds blowing in the area and the inaccessible terrain.

Firefighters battled the blaze throughout the night, while airborne assistance was despatched at dawn.
