Tanzania — High winds have fanned whereas downpours later have dampened a forest fire on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain peak, late on Monday, local media reported.
The This Day newspaper on Wednesday quoted Kilimanjaro National Park Chief Warden Nyamakumbati Mafuru as confirming the fire but without giving the extent of the damage the fire might have caused or whether the fire had been put under control.
“The fire started on the eastern side of the mountain … and spread westward toward the Mandara camp (for mountaineers),” said the chief warden who added that park officials and local residents had joined hands in putting out the fire.
Park officials have already gone out to access the total damage caused by the fire which broke out toward the end of the dry season in Tanzania.
On Monday and Tuesday, rains fell on quite some parts of the country to usher in the short rainy season which lasts till January and February when long rainy season takes over.

Concern has been expressed about measures to be taken to manage, rather than fighting, the fires. While we appreciate the role played by the department of Forestry and range resources of engaging a consultant to draft a fire management policy, we feel the document is belated. Much has happened since 2007, when workshops were conducted in Gantsi, Francistown and Palapye to accord stakeholders an opportunity to contribute towards the development of the policy and to promote an integrated inter-governmental fire management approach.
