South Africa — Fire-fighters have been trying to contain raging veld fires in the Linksfield area, Johannesburg emergency services said on Sunday.
Spokesperson Percy Morokane said fire-fighters have been on the scene since 12:30 pm on Saturday.
“Fire-fighters are using the bucher vehicle, that has specialised mounted equipment, as well as hand-held apparatus called grass beaters.”
Morokane said vast acres of land has been destroyed, which is a concern as the ecosystem had been affected and disturbed.
Meanwhile, 50 people were left homeless after a fire in Alexandra destroyed 22 shacks just before 8am on Sunday.
Morokane said the cause of the fire was not known yet.
No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
