South Africa — An elderly couple has been burnt to death at Nkandla in northern KwaZulu-Natal in a veld fires.
Mtuseni an 89-year-old and 60-year-old Khathazekile Dlamini were inside their house at eSbhudeni village when it caught alight. Police spokesperson Mbongeni Mdlalose says the fires gutted 170 homesteads at EMangidini and surrounding areas. Mdlalose says at Mhlathuzane, on the north coast, seven houses were burnt leaving several families homeless. The affected families have been housed at nearby schools and community halls.
More reports of runaway fires and gale force winds are being received from parts of KwaZulu-Natal – this time from Mbazwana ward in Mhlabuyalingana Municipality near Sodwana in the north of the province. Mayor D.A. Ncube says 12 houses have been razed by fire so far.
