USA — East Pierce County Fire and Rescue Chief Dan Packer died in a California wildfire July 27. Since July 26, Packer, 49, had been serving as division supervisor in the Siskiyou mountains in Northern California. But on Saturday, the wind shifted unexpectedly and fire overtook him.

Packer was the second firefighter from Washington state to die in the fire. On July 25, Olympic National Park Firefighter Andrew Palmer lost his life after being struck by a tree in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue provides services to more than 73,000 people in and around Lake Tapps, Sumner and Bonney Lake.

Auburn Mayor Pete Lewis has ordered all of the city’s American flags lowered to half staff.
