Namibia — The veld fire that had raged since early Sunday in the Gibeon Constituency was put out Monday night.

It is suspected that the fire, which destroyed an estimated 10 000 hectares of grazing, started when farmers tried to smoke out bees from a tree to harvest honey.

Hardap Governor Katrina Hanse-Himarwa yesterday confirmed that the fire in the Maltahoehe, Uibes and Gibeon areas had been extinguished.

She said an assessment had to be done to determine the after-effects of the fire on farmers.

Hanse-Himarwa said although no human or livestock deaths had been reported, farmers had feared for their safety.

“Though no other complaints were received from the affected local farmers, they were visibly traumatised,” Hanse-Himarwa said.
