Greece — Tourist chiefs on the Greek island of Rhodes are reassuring the travel industry that it is business as usual after last week’s forest fires.

The fires did not affect any of the resort areas and all hotels are operating normally, it said.

Rhodes Hotel Association president Vassilis Minaides said: “We are thankful that last week’s fire did not encroach on tourist resort areas and that no lives were ever at any risk.

“While some locations in the south-east of the island were affected by smoke, the impact on visitors on the island was temporary. It is now business as usual.”

TUI Travel was forced to evacuate up to 400 customers on Friday due to the forest fires sweeping across Rhodes.

A Thomson spokesman said while there was no immediate danger, the decision was made to move the Thomson and First Choice guests to properties elsewhere to give them a reprieve from the smoke.
