Canada — Portage la Prairie RCMP are investigating after a deceased man was discovered in a field, following a controlled grass fire in the Austin area.

On July 21 at about 6 p.m., Portage RCMP were called to a report a man was found deceased.

The fatality appeared to be the result of the grass fire.

Upon arrival at the scene, police confirmed the deceased is a 76-year-old man who had been watching over a grass fire in and around his property in the Austin area.

Portage RCMP are not releasing the name of the deceased man at this time.

There were no other injuries reported as a result of this fire.

The RCMP has no reason to believe that foul play is suspected.

The investigation continues, as an autopsy is being performed by the Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.
