South Africa — A large part of Joburg was without electricity yesterday after a veld fire tripped a substation. The fire on the M2 East near the Denver offramp was so large it affected the transmission lines of the Prospect substation, one of City Power’s biggest substations.

City Power general manager Louis Pieterse said the fire started at about 2.30pm and electricity was returned at 4.30pm.

“The power outage affected the entire north-east of Joburg.” Pieterse said suburbs affected were Kensington, Observatory, Norwood, Rosebank, Melrose and surrounding areas.
