Australia — Residents of the South East are being warned by the Country Fire Service (CFS) not to fall for a financial scam that’s operating in the region.

People living at Biscuit Flat near Kingston have reported receiving phone calls from someone pretending to be collecting money to help volunteers during the next bushfire season.

The CFS is not involved in such fundraising venture and is urging people not to be tricked into giving money.

CFS regional training officer Scott Murray said they were concerned the scam operators were calling people implying they were from the CFS.

“The lady who phoned in and told us about it said they hung up as soon as she started questioning them,” he said.

“They never actually said they were from the CFS, but by saying they were collecting for bushfires they implied it.”

Mr Murray said if people believe they have been contacted by a person involved in the scam they should contact SA Police.
