Brunei — Motorists passing by Kg Sengkurong, Tutong slowed down to witness a fire that burned a small bush near the Tutong-Muara Highway on Saturday afternoon.

The bush fire was approved by the authorities and watched over by firemen on the scene.

A traffic officer from the Tutong District Police Headquarters explained that the fire was started with the approval of the relevant authorities.

“The owner of the land sought permission to burn the bushes and relevant departments approved the application. The firemen’s task was to control the fire in case it spreads to nearby houses,” said Sgt Hj Masri, adding, “Our task is to control the traffic just in case people stop to witness the fire.”

He explained that landowners can apply to burn their bushes but not all applicants will be approved.

“If the bush is very near to neighbouring houses then the application will be turned down. In this case, the owner was given permission as the firemen were sure they could control the fire without spreading to nearby houses.”
