Nicosia, Cyprus — A Cyprus Fire Department spokeswoman says an off-duty police officer was killed while helping extinguish a wildfire in the island’s central Troodos mountain region.

Liza Kemitzi says the 25-year-old officer lived in the hillside village of Sina Oros where the fire broke out shortly after noon.

She says four other people were slightly hurt battling the fire that broke out Sunday near a village supermarket.

Four water-dropping aircraft helped fire fighters on the ground bring the blaze under control.

The blaze scorched 25 acres (10 hectares) of trees and wild growth 28 miles (45 kilometers )
