Ireland — Two firefighters were hurt while battling a 25-acre grass fire ona hillside along Interstate 580 Thursday afternoon.
At 3:52 p.m., 90 firefighters from the Alameda County, Cal Fire,Livermore-Pleasanton, Camp Parks, and East Bay Regional Parks fire departmentsresponded to the blaze a half mile east of Palomares Canyon, just above OldDublin Canyon Road in Castro Valley.
Two helicopters assisted by dropping water from above.
The fire was started when a car crashed into a power pole and live wiresignited the grass, fire officials said. No one was hurt in the crash.
One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion, and another chest pains. Bothfirefighters were taken to a hospital.
The fire was contained three hours later.
Cal Fire firefighters planned to spend the night at the scene to make surethere are no flare-ups, according to the Alameda County department.
Old Dublin Canyon Road was expected to be closed to traffic untilapproximately 10 a.m. Friday morning.
