Australia — Cigarettes that put themselves out could be hitting our shelves next year in a bid to stop dozens of fires.

67 people died last year from fires sparked by lit cigarettes and emergency services ministers have met today to try to solve the problem.

Stafford Sanders from anti-smoking group ASH says even tobacco companies agree it’s the right thing to do.

“We welcome the results.”

“It’s possible that it will do quite a bit to reduce the number of tobacco caused fires which cause something like 14 deaths and $52 million damage in Australia each year.”
