Hamilton, Ontario, Canada — A man accused of causing an enormous grass fire in Springbank while trying to kill gophers may be facing charges and fines worth thousands of dollars.
Firefighters believe a large fire that burned Saturday in the Springbank Heights area for hours was started by a man shoving a propane torch down a gopher hole.
The fire destroyed vehicles and outbuildings in the quarter section it burned.
A fire ban is on in the area. The man faces a large fine for having an open flame, said Rocky View assistant deputy fire Chief Jim Pendergast.
The man could also face a bill for the cost of firefighter upwards of $40,000.
