Texas, USA — Wildfires were threatening hundreds of homes in Teaxs Sunday as firefighters continued to battle the seemingly unrelenting wildfire season.

Nearly 200,000 acres in 11 counties have been consumed by fires just this weekend, in what is becoming one of the worst wildfire seasons on record.

A massive fire raced across two counties Saturday night near San Antonio, burning more more than 80,000 acres. Firefighters are hoping predicted rain this week will help control the fire that was described by David Synatzske of Texas Parks and Wildlife as “one of the worst fires that I’ve seen.”

In south Texas, evacuations had been ordered near Cotulla. In Pscos County in area south of Fort Stockton, wildfires had spread across more than 30,000 acres.

A fire in King County, was 40 percent contacted Saturday night, but was still threatening 230 structures. And in Dimmitt County in Southwest Texas, a fire forced the evacuation of 20 homes Saturday and was threatening 100 others.

President George Bush authorized an emergency declaration Saturday to provide assistance to fight the fires in 184 counties. More than 100,000 acres burned Friday, making it one of the worst single days for Texas wildfires in years.
