Volunteers’lit South West bushfire’ – two charged

Perth, Australia — Arson Squad detectives have charged two 19-year-oldvolunteer firefighters with deliberately setting bushland ablaze near Bridgetownin January.

Police allege the two men stopped their vehicle near a stand of Balga (blackboy) trees on Warner Road at Hester around 2am on January 13 and set fireto leaf foliage on one of the trees.

The flames spread into nearby grass and burnt out 1000 sq m of bush andfanned by winds the fire started to move towards nearby houses.

Local volunteer firefighters doused the blaze and there was no damage toproperty.

Both men are charged with one count of wilfully lighting a fire.  Theywill appear in the Bridgetown Magistrate’s Court on 8 April 2008.
