Australia — Former chief officer of the ACT Fire Brigade David Prince says the Territory is probably not ready for another bushfire of the magnitude of the one which devastated parts of Canberra in 2003.
Mr Prince was appearing before an ACT Legislative Assembly inquiry into fire and emergency services arrangements.
He has told the inquiry, firefighters are doing a fantastic job but problems will emerge if more senior employees are not being adequately tested.
“In the case of a major event such as 2003, are you ready, are you prepared?” he said.
“That’s the key. And when you ask yourself that question, you start saying we’re probably not.”
