USA — Smoke from the North Carolina wildfires can be smelled throughout Hampton Roads.  Norfolk dispatch tells WAVY.com they received several calls of house fires Friday morning, only when the fire department gets there, nothing’s burning.  They say people are waking up, smelling smoke, and panicking.

Some viewers in Portsmouth have called the WAVY newsroom asking if there is a fire near their homes and some have even complained of eye irritation and nausea, but emergency workers say there’s no need to panic.

In Portsmouth, the smokey smell has been in the air since about Tuesday or Wednesday, but today (Friday) actually seems worse.

“That’s where I feel like the odor’s coming back.  I thought with the rain and the snow it would have deleted it all out, but it seems like it’s coming back,” says one Portsmouth resident.
