Texas, USA — The combination of low humidity, gusty winds and abundant fuel has the Texas Forest Service worried.

The dry conditions means there’s an increased threat of wildfires as the old year ends and the new year begins.

A Red Flag Warning was in effect Monday for much of Central Texas and the National Weather Service says there’s an elevated threat of wildfires Tuesday because of the dry conditions.

“Our serious problem is in the grasses, as we have already experienced freezing temperatures across most of the state,” said Texas Forest Service urban wildland interface coordinator Rich Gray.

“Once you get the abundance of frost-cured grasses and high winds from frontal passages, the threat of wind-driven wildfires is more likely,” Gray said.

Robertson County Commissioners voted Monday to reinstate a countywide ban on outdoor burning because of the fire danger.

Burn bans and fireworks bans were already in effect in some other Central Texas counties.
