USA — Area fire fighters and law enforcement are on the scene of a wildfire in Southwest Lubbock.
According to the Lubbock Fire Department, sparks from a train traveling along the Brownfield Highway sparked a series of brush fires around noon Monday. The smoke was so dense, that visibility became extremely poor in the vicinity of Brownfield and 82nd Street. Lubbock and Wolfforth Police were called to assist with monitoring traffic.
In an effort to prevent any further wildfires, authorities stopped the train just west of the Hockley County line. Upon further inspection, the train was allowed to continue.
The National Weather Service has issued an alert, addressing the elevated wildfire danger due to the high winds and extremely dry conditions. Use caution when disposing of cigarette butts, using electrical equipment outdoors, or driving a motor vehicle on grass/brush.
Monday afternoon, 20 to 30 mph winds are expected in the Lubbock area. Blowing dust is also a concern.
