Australia — The Kangaroo Island Council says it will take months for the community to fully recover from the December bushfires.
About one fifth of the island was blackened by fires that killed a man and more than 900 stock.
The Mayor, Jayne Bates, says the fire’s aftermath will be felt on the island for a fairly long time.
“I think the recovery process will take some months, you don’t go through an event like this without it having an effect that lasts for quite a while,” she said.
“Our aim through the recovery is to lessen that effect and to enable this community to move back to normality as quickly as possible, that will take some time, but we have a very resilient and resourceful community here on this island.”
