BATON ROUGE, La. — A 34-year-old Baton Rouge woman accused of attempting to illegally profit from October’s Southern California wildfires has been indicted by a federal grand jury.
Phillipia Ware is accused of making false and fraudulent claims to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for disaster assistance benefits.
The indictment gives this account: Ware submitted an application to FEMA for benefits on Oct. 25, claiming her primary residence in San Diego had sustained damage from the wildfires. As part of her application, Ware claimed she needed emergency food, clothing and shelter.
Following a FEMA investigation, authorities discovered that Ware lives in Baton Rouge and does not have a California residence.
