Firefighters in Western Australia will have the use of a new water bombing helicopter when they tackle bushfires this summer.

The State Government is spending more than $1 million to trial the Fire King, a firefighting version of the Australian Navy Sea King helicopter.

The Fire King was recently used to tackle major bush fires in California.

It can carry 4,000 litres of water which is about four times what the current fleet of Helitacs can manage.

The aircraft can refill its water tanks in just 30 seconds.

The helicopter will support the current fleet of four helitacs and eight fixed wing aircraft which are based throughout the state’s South West.
