Greece — Albertans are chipping in so the province’s Greek community can help their homeland recover from a devastating series of forest fires.
Dimitrios Garanis, president of the Hellenic Canadian Community of Edmonton and Region, said the community was able to raise some $57,000 on its own and consequently max out the government’s fund-matching limit.
Thomas Lukaszuk, MLA for Edmonton-Castle Downs, presented the community with a $50,000 cheque yesterday through the Wild Rose Foundation’s International Development Program.
Garanis says the money will finance a project to reforest and replace olive trees and livestock in the Kalamata and Ilia regions of southern Greece worst hit by last summer’s fires.
The fire season was one of the worst in Greece over the past 100 years.
