LOMPOC, Calif. (AP) – California Fish and Game officials have agreed to a brush clearing project at the edges of the Burton Mesa Ecological Reserve in an effort to lessen the wildfire danger to nearby homes.
Santa Barbara County fire officials and Supervisor Brooks Firestone have been pressing the state to act on the fire threat.
The area hasn’t burned in about 70 years and fire officials say homes in Mission Hills, Vandenberg Village and the Mesa Oaks areas are at risk.
Most vegetation within a 100-foot-wide zone where the reserve borders housing would be cleared away under the terms of the project tentatively set to being next month.
