Drought-stricken Portugal is deploying troops to support weary fire crews battling 22 forest fires that helped blanket Lisbon in smoke, authorities said on Friday.

With temperatures soaring to more than 40 degrees Celsius (105 degrees Fahrenheit), Interior Minister Antonio Costa appealed to employers to release volunteer firefighters to help spell crews.

Many of them have been fighting blazes for 24 hours straight.
