Haze hits Penang, no rain forecast for this week

Penang, Malaysia — Penangites will have to bear with the haze for the next few days as no rain has been forecast for this week.

According to the state Meteorological Department at 10am yesterday, visibility in Butterworth was 2km and Bayan Lepas was 5km. 

The spokesman said the usual visibility level in the state was more than 10km. 

“We will be monitoring the situation. This condition is expected to prevail for the next few days as there are still hotspots in Southern Sumatra,” he said.

He added that the department did not foresee any rainfall in the next few days. 

A spokesman from the Department of Environment said the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading in Prai was at 64 and 72 at Universiti Sains Malaysia on the island at 11am. 

API readings of 0-50 are good, 51-100 (moderate), 201-300 (very unhealthy) and above 300 (hazardous).
