South Africa – Firefighters are battling to contain a huge veld fire that isclosing in on the suburbs of Nelspruit in Mpumalanga.
This is just one of the 37 veld and plantation fires that are raging throughoutthe province. More than 100 fire fighters have been deployed in an attempt tocontain the fires. Twenty-six spotter planes and choppers are also at hand toprovide air support.
The provincial co-ordinator for working on fire, Jacques Benade, says the fireshave been sparked by warm and windy conditions that are likely to continuetomorrow.
