Australia — The Federal Government has doubled itsfunding for fighting and preventing Victorian bushfires.

Prime Minister John Howard has announced an extra $61million for aerial fire fighting resources and preventative programs.

The National Aerial Firefighting Centre’s Ewan Fergusonsays the funding will help get more planes and helicopters in the air.

“Over the next weeks and months we’ll see matchingcontribution from states and territories, so obviously more funds will meanaircraft,” he said.

“It’s too early to tell exactly what type and mix ofaircraft but yes this means more aircraft supporting firefighters and communityon the ground.”
