Crews continue to battle WA fire

Western Australia — Fire authorities will continue topour water on a peat fire burning near Lake Forrestdale, south of Perth, sinceSaturday.

The lake is classified as an internationally significantwetland and is used by large migratory birds from Siberia during winter.

Department of Environment and Conservation firecoordinator Mike Cantelo says peat fires are unpredictable and can surface,igniting vegetation.

“We’re putting a lot of water on it at the momentand hopefully with the amount of water we’re putting on it and the moisturethat’s already there, we’ll hopefully have it completely under control by aboutMonday,” he said.

The area has been cordoned off and there are signswarning walkers the ground above could collapse.
