USA — Firefighters were gaining the upperhand on a grass fire burning close to homes late Monday night in Suisun City.

The fire had burned an estimated 100 acres by 11:30 p.m. in a field near the Petonia Slough.
People living just hundreds of feet from the fire were voluntarily evacuated mostly because of heavy smoke and ash blowing in the direction of several homes and an apartment complex, a fire official said.
The first firefighters arrived to battle the flames shortly before 10 p.m. They were being joined by firefighters from other areas, including Napa and Vallejo.
