Australia — Numerous fires continue to burn across Victoria, particularly in the North East high country and Gippsland regions, but fire authorities report nearly all are under control.

The sheer number of fires have sent a pall of smoke across southern NSW and the ACT, casting a haze over Canberra and even the southern suburbs of Sydney.

NSW Rural Fire Service report that there are no fires of significance burning in the area, with all of the smoke coming from Victoria.

It says there is potential for the smoke haze to continue to blow in over the southern parts of the State until these fires are extinguished.

Weather conditions forecast over the coming days may deteriorate and produce more extreme fire behaviour in the Gippsland area.

In some cases driving conditions may be affected by smoke across roadways and people with respiratory conditions are advised to stay indoors.
