Veld fire at Kalahari Anib Park Lodge

A VELD fire that raged for about four hours on Wednesday destroyed hundreds of hectares of grazing at the Kalahari Anib Park Lodge.
Lodge manager Jaco Visser told The Namibian that the fire started about one kilometre east of the lodge at around 14h00.
The exact cause of the fire is unknown.
It destroyed up to 400 hectares of grazing.
No livestock or human casualties were reported.
Visser said lodge workers and people from neighbouring farms managed to bring the fire under control later that afternoon.
He said it was lucky that there was no wind to fan the flames.
Visser thanked those who helped to fight the fire, saying that the area’s emergency plan helped to avert a disaster.
“The right equipment early in the game saved both lives and grazing and allowed us to escape disaster,” he said.
The Kalahari Anib Park Lodge is located northeast of Mariental.
