Crews to spend New Year’s battling bushfire

Australia — The Country Fire Service (CFS) in South Australia says crews will work through the night to control a blaze which is burning near the border with Victoria.
The fire started this afternoon in the Little Desert National Park, in north-west Victoria, as a result of lightning strikes.
CFS regional commander Brett Merritt says water-tankers and fixed-wing fire bombers are being used to contain the fire before it reaches the railway line from Bangham to Bordertown.
“The fire has actually crossed the border now – a number of hours ago – it’s burnt in some sections a couple of kilometres over into South Australia,” he said.
“Probably about nine kilometres of the length of the park has burnt out in South Australia.”
The CFS says the fire poses no immediate danger but Bangham residents are being encouraged to activate their bushfire actionplans.
