Australia — Parts of the north-west received steady falls of rain overnight as heavy showers and isolated storms passed over the region.

Narrabri was inundated with about 38 millimetres, while Tamworth received 11mm.

The Rural Fire Service says the showers have helped dampen a 2,500 hectare blaze in the Pilliga State Forest south-west of Narrabri.

However, Inspector Steve Hall says there is a danger lightning strikes may have sparked new fires in the district.

“There was a fair amount of rain involved with the storm as it passed through and we certainly love to see the rain, we just don’t like the lightning that comes with it unfortunately,” he said.
