Australia — Rain is usually welcomed in Victoria, where thousands of hectares of bush are still burning out of control.

But it has come at just the wrong time for firefighters trying to contain nine new blazes, which flared up at the weekend.

Fire Service spokesman Peter Billing says rain is just what they needed two weeks ago, but now it is actually hampering their efforts.

Peter Billing says they are on top of the new bush fires that were started by lightning in the last 24-48 hours. However, he says the back-burning they had planned to do overnight has been put on hold due to the moisture.

The area causing most concern is the 347,000 hectare Great Divide fire in the state’s north-east.
