USA — Western governors are endorsing federal wildfire management policiesthey say have allowed the thinning of forests to reduce risks of wildfires.
Federal agriculture undersecretary Mark Rey says a sign of success is thatdespite a record fire season with nearly ten million acres burned, only 800primary homes were lost this year.
That’s compared with 2,000 homes in 2002 and three-thousand homes in 2003.
The Western Governors’ Association members are meeting in Henderson, Nevada thisweek.
South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds is chairman of the governors association. Hesays local, state and federal cooperation is needed because “fire does notrecognize boundaries.”
