Australia– A bushfire in Queensland’s north-west has forced the closure of a major national park and could threaten millions of dollars worth of facilities.

The Boodjamulla Lawn Hill National Park, 285 kilometres north-west of Mt Isa, has been closed until at least early next week.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service spokesman Marty McLaughlin says about 60,000 hectares have been burnt so far.

But he is confident the fire can be prevented from damaging park facilities, including ranger accommodation and power and communications equipment.

“We’re not too concerned about the fire intensity threatening the property at all, and we’ve got good firebreaks around the property,” he said.

“It’s just a matter of a waiting game until the fire gets close enough that we can back-burn into it.”
