Australia — Hot conditions and strong winds are expected to return andthreaten to continue Australia’s early-season wildfires. Hundreds offirefighters are battling a series of fires burning across southern and easternAustralia. Gusty winds and temperatures well above 35 degrees Celsius (95Fahrenheit) earlier fueled more than 300 wildfires burning across Victoria,South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania states.
As a reaction these threats, officials placed total fire bans in some areasof New South Wales state and the Australian Capital Territory. The fire banareas included Sydney and the national capital Canberra. A total ban bars allcontrolled fires including barbecues, camp fires and the burning of domestic orgarden waste.
