Australia — South Australia’s bushfire prevention system is failing, thestate’s top firefighter has told a coronial inquest into nine deaths.
Country Fire Service (CFS) chief officer Euan Ferguson said an overhaul ofbushfire prevention laws was needed.
Mr Ferguson was giving evidence today at the inquest on nine people who diedin a massive bushfire on the lower Eyre Peninsula in January last year.
He rated the peninsula at the lower end of a scale from one to 10 foradhering to bushfire prevention laws.
“The lower Eyre Peninsula would have to be more down toward the bottomend, probably a one or a two,” Mr Ferguson said.
